Is it a “stallion making” race for the winner only ?

Or just gaining a start gives you the right of passage to enter the breeding barn....

Well the numbers suggest you only have to run in the race !

The colt only needs to appear in the race

Here are the facts of the race since 2016:

  • 44 colts that have run in this race have been retired [2016 to 2023].

  • Of these runners, 43 colts have commenced stallion duties [98%]

    • it seems a ridiculously high number compared to any other race.

Here are the runners in chronological order of the race year:

2016

ree
  • 6 colts - all of them [100%] became stallions

    • 3 of the 6 won group 1 races

    • Russian Revolution won 2 x group 1 races

    • collectively this race generated 5 group 1 wins

This was an outstanding version of the race with the ongoing battle that was being created by Flying Artie and Star Turn. It had an element of the ultimate contest, on this occasion Flying Artie burst away with 100m to run and Astern finished hard to just blaze Star Turn for second place.

MATRIX OF ALL CLASHES

this crop - as 2yo & 3yo:

Here is the matrix of the entire 2yo and 3yo season [Group 1-2-3 races only] for the colts that contested the Coolmore Stud Stakes.

So any other "colt" will only appear here if they competed against the colts that went onto run in the Coolmore Stud Stakes.

ree

FLYING ARTIE

  • He was truly amazing, in eight races at group level as a 2yo and 3yo, he longest finishing margin from the winner was 2.3 lengths

  • He met Star Turn 6 times and finished ahead of him in 5 of those races.

  • He met Extreme Choioce 4 times and finished ahead of him in 3 of those races.

ASTERN

  • Won 3 group races before the Coolmore [plus a close 2nd in Roman Consul]

STAR TURN

  • Won 2 races before the Coolmore, he did not beat any Coolmore colts in those races.

RUSSIAN REVOLUTION

  • Late to group races and pipped Astern to win the Roman Consul.

  • Won the Galaxy against the older horses as a 3yo.

EXTREME CHOICE

  • Won both his group races as a 2yo before tasting defeat in the Golden Slipper.

  • Won the Moir against older horses as a 3yo.

  • Also close up as a 3yo against older horses in the Oakleigh Plate and Newmarket

3yo's AGAINST OLDER HORSES

  • The only colts to beat the older horses in group races as 3yo's were Extreme Choice and Russian Revolution.

2017

ree
  • 6 colts - all of them [100%] became stallions

    • 3 of the 6 won group 1 races

    • Trapeze Artist won 4 x group 1 races

    • Merchant Navy won 2 x group 1 races

    • collectively this race generated 7 group 1 wins

The shorter priced fillies looked like filling the placings with only 150m to run and the Merchant Navy produced a withering burst that you had to watch multiple times so you could understand what you just watched.

An amazing finish up along the rails and the winner paid around $20

ree
  • 6 colts - 5 of them [84%] became stallions

    • 1 of the 6 won group 1 races

    • collectively this race generated 1 x group 1 win

    • Unsure on the status of Diplomatico ????

The winning filly [Sunlight] was very special.

It was a tough run from Lean Mean Machine who was only headed in the final 75m, whilst Zousain was mighty finishing hard for a tight second.

    • 3 of the 4 won group 1 races

    • Bivouac won 3 x group 1 races

    • collectively this race generated 5 group 1 wins.

Exceedance was always an athletic specimen, i saw him again at the 24' Hunter Valley stallion parades and he still looked like he could race today.

We all know how good Bivouac was and he looked home after exploding away at the 200m, unfortunately for him Exceedance had a lot to offer and cruised by winning by almost 1.5 lengths along the inside - a great race !

September Run was an easy and convincing winner along the outside rail, however Wild Ruler was easily the best colt and fought on valiantly with the first 3 having a clear margin on the remainder of the field.

    • Home Affairs won 2 x group 1 races

Some races you will never forget and this was one.... Home Affairs was declared the winner 350m form home and brained the field by many lengths. one of the most impressive Coolmore Stud Stakes victories that I had witnessed.

No comment on any of the colts performances in this running of the race, the filly In Secret just brained them and was home by the Clock Tower.

Shinzo and Ozzmosis led all the way and at the 300m Ozzmosis started to assert himself.

It looked more like a grinding win, however it was dominant. I am Unstoppable was also impressive to finish hard and just knock off Shinzo for second place.
