A deeper look into Alpine Edge

I was recently approached to prepare a mating plan by the owner of a Written Tycoon maiden.

Alpine Edge was not the first horse that came to mind, however when delving into sex balancing the top half of the Written Tycoon mare - this guy Alpine Edge was the only horse that provided two options for the mare.

The option is now defunct as the mare is going around one more year with the intent to show a win beside her name for future breeding plans.

However, let's look at any mating where Alpine Edge sex balances with the top half of any

Written Tycoon broodmare.

You can see Alpine Edge has a perfect [SB] of Marscay in red text - the old adage of "return to the stallion, the best blood from his own Dam".

Also Kenmare is sex balanced and you will see below that only a few current stallions can provide him through a son like Alpine Edge does.

Here are some worksheets to show you the specific shortlisted options for certain [SB].

Once I had finished the plan, it intrigued me to look deeper at Alpine Edge and as you will see below, he provides amazing variation with so many broodmares.

It does not matter which broodmare you select from these shown below - they will all give you the same minimum result as it's only based on the top half of the broodmare for that selected stallion.

These hypo mating's are all "6 generation racing pedigrees" - this way I can see the variables in the "engine room" of the racehorse at gens 4-5-6.

Stallion Variation in the pedigree of Alpine Edge

When you look at the 16 stallion variation of his own 5 gen pedigree, you can See Alpine Edge has a relative high potency of the Pharos [9] cluster of stallions, although apart from Nearctic-Danzig, you can see some variation.

• 1 x Royal Charger: Hail To Reason

• 3 x Nasrullah: Naskra - Zeddan - Boldnesian

• 5 x Pharos: Danzig [3] - Nijinsky - Sadlers Wells

He carries the Byerly Turk line of Century which is great variation, however he has no Godolphin Arabian lines such as In Reality, Warning, Known Fact etc.

His other 6 lines are Darley Arabian are made up from:

• 1 x Sickle: Mr Prospector

• 1 x Brokers Tip: To Market

• 1 x Forli: Thatching

• 1 x Pharamond: Buckpasser

• 2 x Star Kingdom: Biscay - Luskin Star

It gets excessive when a 5 gen pedigree comes out at 10-11 or greater, however when he appears in a future mating plan - he has 6 lines of Pharos in his 8 stallions (all the lines in the above diagram with odd numbers in the second column).

You can see from the list of black type winners for Better Than Ready that Alpine Edge is the best credentialled at stud of all three [Alpine Edge - The Odyssey - Better Than Ready].
